The O’Reilly Open Source Software Conference (OSCON) is asking the question, “What is shaping software development?”

There are certainly a number of trends and key factors impacting the direction, speed, and future outcomes of software development, including:

The IoT

IDC forecasts worldwide spend on the Internet of Things to reach $745 billion in 2019. Organizations addressing the IoT shift and establishing a center of competency have to also address the need for robust software capabilities as well as enhanced management to ensure both reliability and security.

Open Source Software

The IoT, machine learning, prescriptive analytics, spatial computing, and open source—just a few disruptive technologies continuing to impact digital transformation. Open source is changing the face and scope of so many technological feats. Why? It’s everywhere. And organizations both small and enterprise are recognizing open source’s impact on business results and ultimately customer satisfaction. Any company resistant to building open source into their code should—some say—jump on the bandwagon or face extinction.

Machine Learning

Companies utilizing AI and machine learning are deploying open source in order to maximize impact across industries. Leaders like OpenAI, TensorFlow, and CNTK are opening the market to new products and exciting innovation to support infrastructure automation and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Machine learning is finding its value in fundamentally changing traditional SDLC models to the point where software development and programming will look very different in the near future.

Customer Demands and Need

Whether it’s your internal or external customers, they become the driving force behind any software development project. As competition grows so do customer demands for higher quality applications at the right price and at the right time of need…while always looking around the corner to what’s next.

What other trends are impacting software development? I’d like to hear from you.
