Macrovision’s InstallShield® 11 Makes Anti-Piracy Standard Part of Installation Process

InstallShield 11 and InstallShield Activation Service Enable Try and Buy Product Activation and Add Support for RPM, Web Services and Servers

SANTA CLARA, Calif.— - May 5, 2005 Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), the leader in Software Value Management, today announced that InstallShield® 11, the industry standard for software installations, now enables small and medium-sized software companies to take advantage of the many anti-piracy benefits enjoyed by the world’s largest software companies. Through the new InstallShield Activation Service, the InstallShield 11 installation tool offers integrated software production activation and also helps software publishers target major growth areas in software, including Linux, Web Services and server installations.

According to a global software piracy study conducted by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and International Data Corporation (IDC), 36 percent of the software installed on computers worldwide was pirated in 2003, representing nearly $29 billion of lost revenues for software publishers. The BSA maintains that unlicensed usage within the enterprise and B2B software markets is rampant, both internationally and in the U.S., where the piracy rate is estimated at 23 percent.

"Given the BSA’s statistics, the new InstallShield Activation Service could save the software industry more than $2 billion, even if only 20% of current InstallShield customers choose to apply the new technology," said Dan Stickel, EVP and general manager of Macrovision’s Software Technologies Group. "We think that product managers and small software business owners will find this value proposition quite compelling and could translate to significant increases in their profitability."

Using InstallShield 11, software publishers can add licensing protection and access to the InstallShield Activation Service for their products at the same time they wrap them for installation. This capability is based upon proven FlexNet™ Publisher technology used by large software vendors such as Autodesk and Citrix. InstallShield 11 and InstallShield Activation Service allow small and medium-sized software vendors to implement an end-to-end activation solution with just a few simple clicks, instead of an extensive administration and development effort required for the full featured FlexNet Publisher technology. Customers of InstallShield Activation Service also have the added flexibility of upgrading to the full featured FlexNet Publisher should they want to use a wider range of capabilities.

"InstallShield has always been our go-to solution for authoring strong and flexible installations," said Owen Dimond, deployment engineer, Advanced Visual Systems (AVS). "InstallShield 11 is the only tool we need to create feature-rich MSI and Multiplatform installations for our OpenViz and AVS/Express customers. The new InstallShield Activation Service is simple, yet powerful and provides users with a means to try a fully functional version of our software and if desired, purchase and

activate with just a few clicks. InstallShield continues to set the bar high and lead the industry in reliable installation solutions."

InstallShield 11 also builds on the award-winning functionality of previous versions and further extends its commitment to the multi-platform market by adding support for RPM and enhancing Assemblies. RPM support provides the ability to create professional installations into the Linux platform, or any platform that has RPM installed. InstallShield 11’s exclusive Collaboration Design feature cuts development time through use of Assemblies - reusable modular components that can be incorporated into many different installations across platforms. InstallShield 11 also extends its server support beyond Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL to include Oracle and Internet Information Services (IIS) 6. New Oracle support allows for easy connection to Oracle database servers and the ability to run SQL Scripts as part of the installation. Other enhancements in the new release include the support for Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) 3.1 and InstallScript 64-bit applications.

InstallShield 11 and InstallShield Activation Service are core components of Macrovision’s FlexNet™ line of Software Value Management solutions, which include software installation, updating, packaging, licensing, entitlement management, end user management, and usage optimization.
